Mumbie Quarry

The illustrations are typical of the excellent quality after preparation.

M19A represents a new family of Xiphosurids (Limuloids) and is larger than normal species for the group e.g. Euproops. There is a counterpart (M19B) and others of this species. In addition another new Xiphosurid, a broader form is represented in the collection from Mumbie.

2471A Platysomus superbus is unique to Mumbie but may be purchased from Mr Wood's Fossils when preparation of further material is complete.

2477 Chondrenchelys nov sp. This is a small bizarre shark, which in this example has been preserved beautifully in relief. Again this is exclusive to Mr Wood's Fossils from Mumbie Quarry.

The quarry has also thrown up the largest Palaeozoic shark known with a Mechel's cartilage of 62cm in length containing large "Cladodont level" teeth. The quarry material, when completely prepared should add enormously to our knowledge, containing as it does: marine and terrestrial plants, marine and terrestrial invertebrates including shrimps (large and small), scorpions, eurypterids and the aforementioned xiphosurids. The vertebrates are probably represented by at least 20 species of fishes. Watch this space!…
