THE FOSSILS OF THE FRODINGHAM IRONSTONE, SCUNTHORPEThese fossils come from the old Ironstone quarries that surround Scunthorpe in Humberside. They were first studied in 1849 by John E. Cross, who was the Vicar of Appleby, but they had been used for many years previously by local people who powdered them and took them as medicines!
The characteristic green colours and slightly unusual minerals are a result of the high Iron content of the rocks they are found in.
