The nodule, in which all ammonites in this area are found has been split to reveal part and counterpart of the ammonite, then the outside of the nodule has been polished smooth. Unpolished examples also available. Ammonite has distinct markings. Very attractive.

THE FOSSILS OF THE FRODINGHAM IRONSTONE, SCUNTHORPE

These fossils come from the old Ironstone quarries that surround Scunthorpe in Humberside. They were first studied in 1849 by John E. Cross, who was the Vicar of Appleby, but they had been used for many years previously by local people who powdered them and took them as medicines!

The characteristic green colours and slightly unusual minerals are a result of the high Iron content of the rocks they are found in.

Asteroceras (195 My) Scunthorpe

These strongly ribbed ammonites have been cut- in- half and polished to highlight their attractive mineralised chambers. They are mainly preserved as a creamy calcite body with a green ironstone matrix, many chambers are mineralised -calcite, quartz, chamosite and some pyrite.

These German Dactylioceras are preserved in multiple blocks with fine detail. The ammonites are brown and the matrix is a dark peat colour. Baculites (100 My) South Dakota

These are a straight form of ammonite from the cretaceous period. All are sections of shell and are free from matrix. Some are polished to show internal sutures others show their mother- of- pearl outer shells.
